"Top blog/Renato Obeid's World/Today's pick: This rambling weblog is worth reading not so much for its satirical posts but more for its insight into the minutiae of life in Lebanon, including the etiquette of road accidents and how to hire a taxi.”

COUNTERREVOLUTIONARY AUNT My72-year old aunt is the most unlikely of siege breakers but that’s exactly what she’s been doing. My cousin, Finance Minister Jihad Azour, is one the ministers currently holed up in the Serail (Prime Minister’s headquarters in Beirut) so my aunt has been ferrying loads of homemade food to him and his colleagues. My parents were at my aunt’s house tonight as my aunt was busy preparing tomorrows batch. Tomorrow’s menu includes kibbi nayye*, so a lady visiting reminded my aunt to include the raw onions that are a part of the kibbi nayye ritual. ‘’As if I’m going to send onions to the Serail!’’ my aunt replied. Raw onions aside, this wonderfully demonstrates Lebanese family values – no matter how old or how high up you are you still maintain family ties and you still call on your mum when you need her.
*A raw dish of ground meat (usually lamb), bulghur wheat and various flavorings.
