"Top blog/Renato Obeid's World/Today's pick: This rambling weblog is worth reading not so much for its satirical posts but more for its insight into the minutiae of life in Lebanon, including the etiquette of road accidents and how to hire a taxi.”

My father and sister returned from the supermarket yesterday afternoon with some unwanted purchases – a one kilogram box of biscuits and a seven hundred gram jar of mayonnaise - both thinking that the other had chosen them. Somebody must have accidentally put them in their trolley or it could be a clever marketing ploy – put things in people’s trolleys when they’re not looking. It reminded me of years ago when I used to go to a local manoucherie and the owner’s toddler son used to give me lollies from the display. I’d politely refuse but he’d insist, so I’d take them and, when the manouchie was ready and I was paying for it, I’d also pay for the lollies. I did this a couple of times until I realized that it could have been a scam and stopped.
